Learn to Sail


The Adult Learn to Sail program is an annual event facilitated by the Hood River Yacht Club and presented by HRYC member volunteers.  It is a great opportunity to get classroom and on the water keel boat sailing instruction at an unbeatable price.

These courses will consist of hands on practice aboard sailboats ranging in size from 20-35 ft. Students will learn to tack, jibe, reef, reach, trim sails and tie knots. Students will also practice 'man overboard' drills and docking techniques. There will be one indoor session and the rest on the water lessons. Open to both beginners and advanced sailors. List of additional gear will be provided at the end of the classroom session. Fee includes a copy of required book, 'Gary Jobson's Sailing Fundamentals."

GORGE Junior Sailing offers dinghy sailing classes for youth ages 5-18 and adults.

Give your kids water and safety skills that will last a lifetime!
Introductory, beginner, intermediate, and advanced sailing classes for youngsters, teenagers, and adults offered in Optis, O'pen Bics, and Club 420s. Instruction in basic sailing skills including rigging, points of sail, knot tying, and safety. Intermediate/ advanced sailors will learn racing skills and advanced boat handling. Beginner classes will be held in the confines of the Hood River Marina; Intermediate and advanced classes will have opportunities to sail on the river in favorable conditions. Classes are taught by US Sailing certified instructors. All students must know how to swim. Life jackets are not provided; children and adults must bring their own properly fitting life jacket. 
  

Adult Dinghy Sailing Classes: 
Class taught in Club 420s, a two-person dinghy, suitable for both youth and adults, with a mainsail and jib. Students typically are of mixed abilities, ranging from novice sailorssailors with keel boat experience but no dinghy experience, and sailors with some dinghy experience. It's a fun class that reviews the basics and works towards short course racing, and will be tailored to the specific abilities of the sailors in the class.

August 2017 Adult Dinghy Sailing
Start date: 8/1/17 - End date: 8/17/17
Dates: August 1, 3, 8, 10, 15, 17.
Tue & Thur evenings. 6:00pm - 8:00pm.




Monday Night Open Sailing: 
July 10 - Aug 14, 6:00pm-7:30pm

Instructors, junior instructors, and experienced sailors are available to answer questions and take people sailingOpen to the public. All ages welcome. Fun-filled family event with lots of boats on the water, even SUPs and kayaks. No registration for Open Sailing, just show up! However, there is a suggested donation at the door. Please bring your own life jackets.
